Nuit Blanche and Le Georges at Centre Pompidou

This is one of those blog posts that won't really represent the magic of last night, which was Nuit Blanche, a yearly celebration in some francophone cities that highlights culture by opening up museums at night and sponsoring a variety of events.

I chose several that were nearby. First, there was a digital reimagining of Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights. We had no idea what to expect, but the Belgian art collection, SMACK, put up a wild digital projection in the gardens at Les Halles.

There was a huge crowd of people, including one incensed woman who was shouting that this was decadent and disgusting and that we shouldn't be enjoying it, which of course, heightened the enjoyment. Here are some closeup pictures, but remember that the figures are moving and morphing continuously.

Next, we had a drink at one of the touristy cafes along the plaza for the Centre Pompidou. I was going to have a fancy drink, but saw a beer and had an unexpected craving for a tall, cold one. It was delicious!

We had planned to see another Nuit Blanche event, which was foam coming from one of the air vents leading to the plaza. It is the brainchild of "noted foam artist" Stéphanie Lüning. It was a little underwhelming, if fun.

It looked more interesting from the escalators of the Pompidou.

We had more fun inside the Beaubourg, while waiting for our 10 p.m. dinner reservation. I had forgotten how terrific the collection is there. Here are some of my favorites from the visit.

The highlight of the night has no photos, but it was a blissful dinner at Georges, conveniently located at the top of the museum with an absolutely divine view of all of Paris. Everything about the evening was pure magic. It was a last-second decision. We got a wonderful table. Because it was fashion week, the place was filled with glamorous people wearing outrageous clothing. There was a DJ playing remixes, and Ira and I even loved that.

The food was the best we've had yet. I started with a lobster and asparagus salad that was tender and flavorful. I then had a silver cod that was perfectly cooked. Ira had another in a long line of tasty vitello tonnato that he's been having. And, because he wasn't very hungry, he just had caviar for his main.

It felt like we had been unfairly transported to the jet set. We walked home through an absolutely packed Paris. It felt like everyone was out and about.

  1. "Noted foam artist" is now something I will aspire to become.

The Bosch display looks like it must have been quite mind-blowing.
