Anselm Kiefer at the Palazzo Ducal
This was certainly one of the artistic highlights of the trip. I wasn't able to capture the enormity of the main piece, but just some fragments.
Anselm Kiefer was entrusted to create a work for the Chamber of the Scrutinio (vote-counting room) in the Palazzo Ducale. It typically has paintings of the defensive wars that Venice fought in, and particularly a large painting on the Battle of Lepanto.
Allegory of the apocalypse, of regeneration, Kiefer's work was solemn and scary and filled with remorse. There is always, of course, a smidgeon of hope in Kiefer. Even in a book burning, there is light.
